Royal Sydney Golf Club

The Royal Sydney Golf Club is one of Australia's foremost social and sporting institutions. A combination of 27 holes of golf, lawn tennis courts, bowling greens all draped in the large number of major golf tournaments held at Royal Sydney have helped to sustain the Club's national and international reputation.

Unlike most famous courses, there is no single architect attributed to the design of Royal Sydney's Championship golf course. In reference books on architecture the designer's name is given, or simply listed as "unknown". Royal Sydney has evolved over time. It developed, changed, adapted, accommodated in detail, but a concept remained. It has always been an "old-fashioned", traditional, heavily bunkered, tough test of golf, especially in any wind. There are no gimmicks, no tricks, chasms or watery caverns. The course was born out of a desire by the founding fathers to have "a seaside course" or "links course". Irving Kent and C.C. Bethune found an area in the Bondi sandhills between Old South Head Road and the ocean, and in 1893 a 9-hole course was laid out.

Royal Sydney remains a most admired, respected and enjoyed institution due to its location, professional and efficiently run tournaments and the tough test of golf it provides. It has hosted numerous championships, most notably, the Australian Open Championships, but also includes the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Men's and Ladies Amateur Championships. Such champions as Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Peter Thomson and Greg Norman have contested Australia's major championship at Royal Sydney.

The Australian Open Championship has been held on 11 occasions at Royal Sydney, the most recent in 1999 when Australian amateur Aaron Baddeley triumphed over a world class field which included dual major winner Greg Norman and the Scot Colin Montgomery.

A private member's course Royal Sydney is only open to members and their guests.
